My job here was what felt like my first big break and “real” job in graphic design. This catalog is not meant to be the most ascetically pleasing, but for me this job was so much more. The basics of the position was the layout of the catalog and I learned the ins and outs quickly. It was production artist position. I worked my way up proving my skills as a graphic designer through special projects and being exceptionally proficient. I was able to take on outside advertising opportunities in national magazines. We would have logo competitions in our team. My managers noticed my skills and I was promoted to more responsibility. Catalogs came out monthly, and eventually I was leading the project. This was very valuable project management experience as coordination with all aspects of the work from writers, photo, and print were involved and under tight deadlines.
Eventually the other eight designers in the department were coming to me for advice on how to use aspects of Photoshop, or Illustrator. I became the go to for technical help in the Creative Suite. Every week for two hours they allowed paid time to train as I saw fit to learn new technics to keep me ahead of the game.
My job at The Sportsman’s Guide created a great base for my career in Graphic design. It was exciting, fun and fulfilling. I learned so much there!
